DYSON STILL OWNS THE HIGH-END HAIR TOOL MARKET

The brand's dominance is reshaping how much of a household's overall haircare budget goes toward tools versus products.

Dyson continues to dominate the premium hair tool category, according to US haircare market analysis published this year a position.

Built initially on the runaway success of its Airwrap styling tool and reinforced since through an expanding range of dryers, straighteners and multi-stylers built around the same core proposition: using controlled airflow and precise, sensor-regulated heat rather than direct extreme-heat contact to style hair with less thermal damage than conventional tools.

The brand's continued dominance is notable partly because of how it's reshaping overall household haircare spending patterns. Where haircare budgets have traditionally split fairly predictably between shampoo, conditioner and occasional treatment products, high-end tools like Dyson's now represent a meaningfully larger, increasingly normalised share of overall category spending - a single tool purchase that, amortised over its multi-year use, competes directly with years of premium product spending for the same household budget.

That shift has implications for how the broader haircare industry thinks about growth.

A customer who has already invested significantly in a premium heat-styling tool designed specifically to minimise damage has less immediate need for aggressive damage-repair treatments than one relying on cheaper, higher-heat tools meaning tool-market growth and bond-repair product growth may increasingly compete for the same customer's limited haircare budget and attention, rather than simply growing the category's total spending independently of each other.

Whether other manufacturers can meaningfully challenge Dyson's specific market position, or whether its early technological and brand-recognition lead proves durable long-term, remains the more interesting open question for a tool category that shows no sign of slowing its overall growth.
