HENRY ZANKOV'S DVF DEBUT WAS A HOMECOMING TWO WAYS OVER

Diane von Furstenberg opened New York Fashion Week's Spring 2027 season on the High Line, directly above the brand's Meatpacking District store a location with its own symbolism for a house returning to the runway after a nine-year absence.

The collection marked the official debut of Henry Zankov, appointed earlier this year as DVF's first-ever artistic director, in a role built specifically around him.

The homecoming was literal on two fronts. Zankov worked at DVF as design director of knitwear from 2014 to 2018 before launching his own namesake label in 2020, then returned in 2025 for an exclusive capsule collection at Bergdorf Goodman that functioned, in his words, as an incubator for testing his instincts against the house's archive. Von Furstenberg herself sat front row for his full runway debut, embracing him at the finale in what one outlet described as a symbolic passing of the torch.

Rather than rewriting the house's codes, Zankov chose to translate them. "Diane always told me it was all about body language," he said, repeating a piece of guidance from the founder that shaped the entire collection. Fluid jersey and gauzy chiffon dresses, archival animal prints reworked alongside new geometrics, and bow-finished blouses leaned into a distinctly Studio 54-era sensibility, underscored by a soundtrack that included Norma Jean Wright's 1978 disco track 'I Like Love.' Where DVF has traditionally built collections around print first, Zankov flipped the process, starting instead with a bold colour story - tomato red, peacock blue, jade and fuchsia - and letting pattern punctuate rather than dominate.

Not every look landed with equal force; some reviewers noted the show's opening looks read as safely archival before the collection found its own voice a few pieces in. But for a house whose commercial identity has occasionally outpaced its runway relevance, a debut this considered - reverent toward Von Furstenberg's legacy without being trapped by it - reads as a genuinely promising reset.
