New York Fashion Week's Spring 2027 season unofficially began a day before the CFDA's calendar formally opened, with a handful of major names choosing to show on 9 September rather than wait for the official 10 September start.

Among them was Rachel Comey, marking the 25th anniversary of her namesake label alongside heavyweight company: Ralph Lauren, Coach - itself celebrating an 85th anniversary the same week - and Cult Gaia all showed that same evening.

A quarter-century is a genuinely rare milestone for an independent American womenswear label to reach without either folding or being absorbed into a larger conglomerate, and Comey's decision to mark the occasion on the eve of fashion week, rather than waiting for a formally allotted calendar slot, reads as a quietly confident scheduling choice in its own right - proof that a designer with a long enough track record doesn't need the CFDA's official start date to command attention.

Comey has built her label's reputation over those 25 years on a specific, consistent point of view - relaxed tailoring, considered proportion, a resolutely unflashy approach to womenswear that has earned her a devoted following without ever chasing the kind of viral, spectacle-driven show format that defines some of her more attention-hungry peers.

In a week otherwise dominated by artistic-director debuts and anniversary spectacles at considerably larger houses, Comey's quarter-century milestone is a smaller story - but an instructive one about what longevity in American independent fashion can actually look like when it isn't built around reinvention for its own sake.
