Colour cosmetics launches from mass and prestige brands alike are increasingly built around skin-first formulations this year.

With Maybelline New York and Too Faced among the brands leading a wave of new releases that treat foundation, concealer and base products as much as a skincare delivery vehicle as a colour-correction tool.

The shift reflects the continued blurring of boundaries between skincare and colour cosmetics that has been building across the beauty industry for several years now - hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptides and other actives more traditionally associated with dedicated serums and moisturisers are increasingly formulated directly into foundations and tinted products, on the premise that a product worn for a full day should actively benefit skin condition over that period rather than simply sitting on top of it as a purely cosmetic layer.

The trend carries genuine appeal for time-pressed buyers seeking to consolidate multi-step routines into fewer products, but it also raises a formulation challenge that hasn't always been fully solved: actives that perform well in a lightweight serum base don't necessarily translate cleanly into a pigmented foundation formula without compromising either the active ingredient's effectiveness or the foundation's coverage and wear time, meaning "skin-first" claims vary considerably in how much genuine skincare benefit they deliver in practice.

As the format becomes more common across price points, from mass-market Maybelline to prestige lines, the meaningful differentiator for buyers is likely to become less about whether a foundation claims skincare benefits at all, and more about which specific actives, at what concentrations, actually make it into a given formula in amounts that matter.
